It's a good one, and worth a quality answer.

Maybe that is the message, and it's a suitably bleak one. I think I'd like to watch the film again before I say yes or no, but it's certainly an interpretation I'd accept.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-91569988407818092512011-07-06T19:18:52.578-05:002011-07-06T19:18:52.578-05:00You're right on your points here--this story i...You're right on your points here--this story is universal, and it's the story Aronofsky likes best. Pi, The Wrestler and even Requiem for a Dream touched on this obsession with perfection at least in part. Just like Chuck Palahniuk writes about self-destruction, Aronofsky films about flawed perfection.

And yes, the lesbian scene is far less important than its hype. It's there...and?

The daughter will be 13 in about a week, so right now, she's really too young for this film. Someday, she may want to see it, and I won't stop her from watching it. When she does want to see it, well, it's on the DVD shelf. She has no interest in it yet--at least none that she's admitted to.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-848612160090466652011-07-06T15:17:58.977-05:002011-07-06T15:17:58.977-05:00What a perfectly encapsulating closing line you ha...What a perfectly encapsulating closing line you have there: "Insanity is never pretty, even when it’s beautiful."

Stereotypes become stereotypes because of their accuracy; I certainly won't begrudge you stating that of hetero males. After all, I'm a part of that 95%. Still, the story told is certainly universal, and I both respected it and greatly enjoyed watching it (not the least of all for the lesbo scene, which really, really, really got blown out of proportion; it's quite possibly the least important scene in the film).

LOL at you forbidding your daughter to see the flick. Methinks that might end up backfiring on you...Dylanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03337478312308606554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-51025694079563869982011-07-06T06:44:26.385-05:002011-07-06T06:44:26.385-05:00Not that Poppy in Happy-go-lucky in any way resemb...Not that Poppy in Happy-go-lucky in any way resembles Portman's character, one aspect though strikes me, the ability to will yourself into certain behaviour, be it happy, or in Nina's case, being dark and a perfect dancer. I think your true self will eventually shine through if you try and behave unlike your natural self for an extended amount of time, a lot of effort and stressful moments to be someone you are not. The question is, if you decide to be different, do you want to lose yourself, can you become who you want to be? I don't think Nina could cope with it all. I guess the best actors manage to pull off being another person(albeit briefly during production, but we don't see the hidden anxiety of acting normally, only the finished movie).
You can't escape from who you are I think maybe is one of the messages of Black Swan, do you agree ?Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-20163271331753954112011-06-29T00:19:01.249-05:002011-06-29T00:19:01.249-05:00My daughter will be 13 in July--she's been dan...My daughter will be 13 in July--she's been dancing for about 10 years, and seriously for most of that. During the school year, she dances five nights a week--something she's allowed to do provided her grades stay up.

It's not the dancing that she can't watch here--it's the obsession with perfection.

I think I understand the decision to never watch this--hearing too much can really spoil a film. It's exactly what happened with me and Oldboy. Most of the films I will never watch are of the Hostel or Human Centipede variety.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-18313893959446195332011-06-29T00:10:28.166-05:002011-06-29T00:10:28.166-05:00my granddaughters have just completed their first ...my granddaughters have just completed their first two classes (one is 3 yrs, the other 4 yrs). i'm getting in on the ground floor with this.

i'm also writing a post on movies i've decided not to watch, and black swan is one of them. but i don't know why; maybe i've just heard too much about it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
