It does though tie well in with a number of other Alabama stories that do not put this place in good ligth. was he part of the problem or the solution? There is a lot in this movie that indicates that the problem is deeper than the mob.

How terrible was that scene with the little girl! In 55 I would probably have fled the cinema.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-8797599713046172792013-07-10T16:01:33.319-05:002013-07-10T16:01:33.319-05:00Exactly. It's nice that Patterson seems to have evolved in his thinking, but I did immediately start thinking that there might be things I couldn't trust here.

This would be a better film with a three-minute intro instead of the 12-15 minutes we get. All we really need is the "this story is based in fact" disclaimer. All of the others stuff--the vice, the proximity to Fort Benning--we can get from the film itself with very minor rewriting.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-55686615379444899582013-07-10T15:06:22.955-05:002013-07-10T15:06:22.955-05:00Other than the opening, which I felt was completel...Other than the opening, which I felt was completely unnecessary and which really bogged down the start, I also liked this film. I agree the violence is higher than what we usually see from a film at this time and perhaps that's why they put the beginning piece on there - as a sort of disclaimer by saying it was all real. Of course, when they show the racist-in-real-life Patterson buddy buddy with a black man in the film you have to wonder what else might have been embellished.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-6057111911071652022013-07-10T13:20:11.795-05:002013-07-10T13:20:11.795-05:00Oh, I love the comparison with Fuller! He's so unabashedly willing to take whatever road gets him to more shock value.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-58585403566760699592013-07-10T11:44:00.341-05:002013-07-10T11:44:00.341-05:00Nice review. I feel approximately the same way about The Phoenix City Story.

I watched this and two other films directed by Phil Karlson during my current "noir month". I've had a mixed reaction. He's always violent and there's a kind of over-the-top earnestness to the stories and acting that works only sporadically. I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. He's like a slightly more orthodox Sam Fuller. I generally love Fuller but the jury is still out on Karlson. marie_dresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334550550983418668noreply@blogger.com
