I love her too so at least there is another reason to watch again even if it is terribly sexist. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-53147123508947847112018-09-21T09:56:16.239-05:002018-09-21T09:56:16.239-05:00For what it's worth, this was her debut.

It is the perfect sort of vehicle for Rosalind Russell, who was born for this sort of movie.

It really is the sexual politics that bothers me here. This isn't a reaction to #MeToo or anything like that--it's so blatantly awful and aggressive that I would have found this repellent years ago. The main thing I remembered was how much I love Jeff Donnell in anything, so I checked out the cast list on IMDB. So YES I've seen this! But the only thing I remember is Jeff Donnell.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-1034095194882664742018-09-19T21:29:23.142-05:002018-09-19T21:29:23.142-05:00It's been ages since I've seen this, I pla...It's been ages since I've seen this, I plan on revisiting it when TCM shows it later this month just to refresh, but I do remember than Roz carried the film effortlessly. I've always liked Janet Blair but I don't recall much about her in this.

Russell must have liked the material it was adapted in the 50's into a stage musical called Wonderful Town where she reprised her role and again had quite a success with it. It was also remade as a film musical in the 50's with a good cast, Betty Garrett & Janet Leigh played the sisters and Bob Fosse who played a role also choreographed the dances but aside from those dances Roz's sure touch is sorely missed. Screwball comedy is such a delicate thing and unless the director is comfortable with it and has performers who are natural at it, and few were at Rosalind Russell's level-Carole Lombard, Irene Dunne, Jean Harlow and a smattering of others-it falls flat.

It's ironic that you said since its a screwball comedy you know everything will work out okay. True enough in the picture but the real life Eileen McKenney and her husband the writer Nathanael West were killed in a car crash in California four days before the original play opened. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
