It's good to see in an animated film written specifically for kids that the idea of actions having consequences is hammered home.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-43987586453696961962014-06-22T13:45:02.588-05:002014-06-22T13:45:02.588-05:00I liked this one quite a bit, too. My only beef with it is that I thought the girl character was a bit too much what with being twice as strong as all the boys, and three times as tough. Movie producers, I get it - girl power - just dial it down a notch to less-than-eye-rolling levels.

The reason I raise this above other films like it is the ending. Without spoiling anything, when "shit just got real" happened, I was very impressed. I didn't think they'd go there.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-39842671900858714042014-05-29T19:03:13.037-05:002014-05-29T19:03:13.037-05:00Yes, that's his real voice. @T--L...@Nick--Grandma, actually. My dad's mom.

@T--Language and accents are frequently handled very badly. It seems like almost everyone tries something different and no one gets it quite right. My preference in many cases is what was done for something like The Third Man. Austrian characters speak German, and if you can't, you deal with it because they aren't subtitled.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-82678866645045524702014-05-25T15:57:49.578-05:002014-05-25T15:57:49.578-05:00One of the strangest and most stupid handling of &...One of the strangest and most stupid handling of "foreign" language must be The 13th Warrior. The cast of vikings are almost exclusively Scandinavian and through the first part they speak a strange mix of Nordic languages. Antonio Banderas as an Arab "foreigner" sits by the fire every evening listening and suddenly the language fades into English and Banderas character "knows" the language. Man, I wish it was that easy. I think I would have preffered them speaking English from the beginning.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-68495296235818236652014-05-25T13:46:33.035-05:002014-05-25T13:46:33.035-05:00So your grandpa could be called a... great dane?! ...So your grandpa could be called a... great dane?! It is such a common problem and realism is not really the strong side of cartoons in general nor this one in particular. I suppose the idea is that these people live in a far away place so they speak with a remote accent. Trust me, you would not want all these character speaking English with a heavy Norwegian accent. That would be truly atrocious.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-19478935164361214762014-05-24T20:10:30.955-05:002014-05-24T20:10:30.955-05:00I can actually live with the Scottish thing, but t...I can actually live with the Scottish thing, but the fact that the kids don't have the accent really does bother me.

But really, that's one of those things where I have to come up with something for the "Why not to watch," and I sometimes (like here) have to grasp at straws.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-50887737371387802532014-05-24T17:57:08.857-05:002014-05-24T17:57:08.857-05:00I was super surprised when I first saw this movie ...I was super surprised when I first saw this movie in theater.
