I'm happy I'm not flying in the next couple of weeks, but beyond that, it's not something I'd consider when getting on a plane.

I like Washington, even if he made some weird choices in his career. This was a good choice for him, though. It may be that the fact that he was so off-kilter that he was able to create that solution. On the other hand, I've known several people who are fully functioning drunks and who are lost when sober. So I never go out of my way when he's the main star to see his films. Be that as it may I thought he was very good in the picture but I think the film lost its way somewhat towards the end. Still it was a decent watch, I'm with you though it isn't something I'll watch again.

I understand what you're saying about the impression and doubt that it creates about pilots but I learned long ago after seeing Marathon Man to separate from being freaked out by movie characters. Otherwise I'd never have gone to the dentist again!joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-73429530361146938332015-12-23T11:54:27.335-06:002015-12-23T11:54:27.335-06:00SPOILER WARNING

I feel it would have been MUCH better if they hadn't gone the clichéd "hero learns his lesson" route and instead had let him walk. After all, it's actually argued in the movie that it wasn't his experience that saved the plane as much as it was the fact that he was drunk/high and came up with a solution that just wasn't rational even though it was right. You simply don't invert a passenger plane, yet he did, and it's the reason he saved most of the people.

I did still like this movie, and I agree Washington deserved his Oscar nomination (more so than say for Training Day).

I thought there were some great musical cues in the film, from Sympathy for the Devil paying when Goodman showed up with the drugs, to Feelin' Alright when Washington took the cocaine to actually straighten himself out.

Did you ever see Billy Connolly's first televised show in the U.S.? Here's a bit he did on flying and proper pilots:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ0TZ7mEyZkChip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-57938427961136643082015-12-23T10:26:51.259-06:002015-12-23T10:26:51.259-06:00I buy the Greek tragedy angle completely, although...I buy the Greek tragedy angle completely, although I might call it Shakespearean. I think it can be read as an indictment of a lot of things, but sometimes I admit I prefer a simpler read.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-65736037976972566182015-12-23T01:45:00.358-06:002015-12-23T01:45:00.358-06:00We had similarly positive reactions, although for ...We had similarly positive reactions, although for very different reasons. I saw "Flight" as several things. Like you, I thought it was a character study, but to me, it was also a Wolfe-style cultural satire and a biblical/Greek-style morality play.Kevin Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01328790917314282058noreply@blogger.com
