It was a remake that didn't need to be, and it certainly didn't need to be on the 1001 Movies list.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-26337909661206166232017-10-10T01:24:20.028-05:002017-10-10T01:24:20.028-05:00I've known about this film for years but I nev...I've known about this film for years but I never had much desire to see it. I'm not that big a fan of The Philadelphia Story, to tell the truth, even though I love His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby and The Awful Truth. So it was hard for me to imagine that High Society would be worth watching with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby when I wasn't really overly enthused about the original with James Stewart and Cary Grant.

But SHEESH it's on the List and TCM showed it today and I watched it and High Society is actually fairly entertaining most of the time. I didn't really like Sinatra too much, but otherwise I love this cast. Truly, you don't often go wrong with Der Bingle. And Grace Kelly is one of my favorites from the 1950s. Not just beautiful but very talented and someone you can ALWAYS count on for an interesting and entertaining performance, even if the movie if rather silly (like Mogambo).

I think I would have been more likely to have watched it a long time ago if I had known Louis Calhern and Celeste Holm were in it! Holm especially is very impressive in one of my favorite numbers, the song where Holm and Sinatra sing about how glad they are not to be millionaires. (So that's one good moment for Sinatra.)

And that actress playing Grace's pesky little sister was fairly hilarious! She's no Virginia Weidlin but she's close enough for our purposes.

And I love any movie where Bing Crosby tries to dance! He was such a great entertainer but no dancer, yet he always seems to steal the scene from the real dancer with some amusing moves and feints. He knew his limitations but also knew how to be entertaining despite them. No...That is an excellent comparison you make there. No matter how big guns you bring to the table it is impossible to match it the original. What High Society does is replace the zing with music. It is damn good music, but this story is all about zing and therefore it looses the comparison.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-26702733859096239062012-06-14T12:52:59.113-05:002012-06-14T12:52:59.113-05:00This is worth seeing if you love love love musical...This is worth seeing if you love love love musicals. If you don't, The Philadelphia Story is all that and a bag of chips in comparison. Just on actors alone--Cary Grant vs. Bing Crosby, James Stewart vs. Frank Sinatra. Nothing against Bing and Frank, but that's just not fair.

It's sort of like the remake of Sabrina, which is a cute film. I really like Harrison Ford, Greg Kinnear, and even Julia Ormond. But they aren't Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, and Audrey Hepburn by a long shot.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-10747044628823752782012-06-14T10:57:09.123-05:002012-06-14T10:57:09.123-05:00My wife and I started watching this, but turned it...My wife and I started watching this, but turned it off soon after it started. It seemed to us the lines were being read without any zip, in contrast to The Philadelphia Story where it's all zip.Retro Houndhttp://www.retrohound.com/noreply@blogger.com
