It's one that I think is on the List because it's rare and it makes someone feel important that they have seen something rare that other people haven't. Everything in Housekeeping is done better elsewhere.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-67292919256323716882018-07-08T16:35:57.139-05:002018-07-08T16:35:57.139-05:00I watched Housekeeping (1987) a few nights ago. I ...I watched Housekeeping (1987) a few nights ago. I liked it well enough. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Not by a long shot.

I thought it was pretty good, but it's taken me a few days of mulling it over to even begin to get why it's on the List. For one thing, it's got a great ending! Thinking about that ending is what's got me thinking I should watch it again (in the future) before I can really assess why it's on the List.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-25340001666251054792013-06-26T21:33:24.682-05:002013-06-26T21:33:24.682-05:00The longer the film went on, the more I agreed wit...The longer the film went on, the more I agreed with Lucille. Sylvie was a danger to herself and others.

Really, it was that I suddenly knew exactly how the film was going to try to manipulate me. I knew what was coming, and I hate it when I know what's coming.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-35668494446738314402013-06-26T11:54:43.195-05:002013-06-26T11:54:43.195-05:00"For the record, I didn't say I liked it...."For the record, I didn't say I liked it. I was actually more interested in the two girls and saw Lahti's character as a supporting one (despite her being top billed). I was surprised when I found out those two actresses didn't do much once they became adults.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-80876596868867513952013-06-24T22:24:14.808-05:002013-06-24T22:24:14.808-05:00Manic pixie dream plots can work. Harold and Maude...Manic pixie dream plots can work. Harold and Maude is a case in point. I did dislike this one in general, though, because Sylvie is exactly the sort of character who drives the model of the MPDG. She's a ridiculous character.

There's nothing wrong with being "free spirited," but Sylvie takes it to dangerous lengths. She's irresponsible with the life and health and well-being of people in her care. That's not charming; it's ugly.

Once I figured out that this is the character with whom I'm supposed to sympathize, I checked out from it emotionally. I can't sympathize with a character who is less of a free spirit and more simply lazy. I never really got the impression from Sylvie that she was trying to get in touch with the universe or anything like that--she just did stuff because she felt like it and didn't want to do the things that she should be doing--like throwing away newspapers.

I find people like this incredibly exasperating, and so I find characters like this just as exasperating.

For the record, I didn't say I liked it. I said I was interested in what might happen. And then I wasn't because I realized exactly where it was heading.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-43453789878208403702013-06-24T15:39:10.238-05:002013-06-24T15:39:10.238-05:00I happened to see this movie just a week or so ago...I happened to see this movie just a week or so ago. I didn't have the same problem with it, since I haven't bought into the concept that I'm SUPPOSED to automatically dislike a movie about a free spirit. The person who coined the MPDG tag (one I dislike) did it to disparage a type of character that he personally disliked. It's like when Spike Lee coined the term "magic negro" to complain about the movie The Green Mile. Just because a movie happens to have a character that someone else has given a disparaging tag to doesn't mean to me I should dislike it. Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

You yourself said you liked this movie until it finally hit you that that character would likely get that disapraging tag. From that point on you disliked it. You ended with "Once you realize it’s a manic pixie dream plot it’s hard to care." I'm afraid I can't fathom how a label could so completely change an experience of a movie for a person.

Did I love Housekeeping? No, but I did like it and would recommend it to others. I had no problem with the ending; in fact, I sort of expected it once the sisters grew apart. I felt the final shot was a great one.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
