That's kind of the point--that the boxing world was the only place where he could survive.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-33355351536240982902023-08-06T07:10:45.598-05:002023-08-06T07:10:45.598-05:00Even with your not overwhelming enthusiasm for Rag...Even with your not overwhelming enthusiasm for Raging Bull, I think you are far more positive than I am. We agree on what is unpleasant here, but fail to see the redeeming elements. I do not like boxing and without that, there is only the technical performance left. That on its own, no matter how impressive, does not carry a movie for me.
I just do not see the point of this movie, unless it is to confirm to me what kind of people and what kind of sports to stay away from.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-65581289506813514972013-01-07T16:11:49.565-06:002013-01-07T16:11:49.565-06:00LaMotta's reaction is interesting, but not rea...LaMotta's reaction is interesting, but not really surprising. If the portrayal is accurate, he's not the type who would be much given to introspection.

I know precisely what you mean about The Dark Knight. Ledger's performance is one for the ages, but I still think that Batman Begins is a much better film overall, and it's the one I'd much rather watch. I think I said some variation of that on this film--the performances are great and worth seeing, but the film itself is not very enjoyable.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-28305413882492256942013-01-07T15:55:49.919-06:002013-01-07T15:55:49.919-06:00I saw this quite a few years ago, probably some ti...I saw this quite a few years ago, probably some time in the late 1990s when I started to use the IMDB Top 250 lists for movie suggestions. I saw why people were so impressed with it, but I've never watched it again.

For me, this is the kind of film you watch for the performances in it, not for the movie itself. That statement may or may not make sense. (I've mostly given up trying to explain to Dark Knight fans why I can think that Ledger gave a terrific performance as the Joker, but why that doesn't equate to a terrific movie as a whole for me).

Somewhere along the way I read that Lamotta watched the film and afterwards said that he never realized how much of a dick he was; that he couldn't really argue with the way he was portrayed. He'd never really stopped to think about it from anyone else's perspective, though.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-67825092395923436152013-01-06T10:07:23.243-06:002013-01-06T10:07:23.243-06:00I'm with you. I'm probably not one-and-done with it, but it will be some time before I decide to see it again.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-71695850496461723532013-01-06T08:39:55.993-06:002013-01-06T08:39:55.993-06:00I've only seen Raging Bull once, and that was ...I've only seen Raging Bull once, and that was way back in like 1998 or something. I'm with you in that it's a stunning movie, but difficult to love. "Unpleasant" is a good word for it. My big issue was just finding the characters (especially Jake) to be just horrid people. I know that Scorsese is doing this on purpose and spotlighting Jake's simple-minded brutality, but it's hard to get so excited about his story. This makes it tough for me to think about sitting down to re-watch it anytime soon. I don't necessarily dislike it because of how unpleasant the story is, but I just find it a bit too in my face most of the time. P

art of it is the loud performances, part of it is Scorsese's style, but I just find the film a bit to overbearing most of the time. I get why people love it, it's a fantastically crafted film with amazing performances, I just don't care for this style of film. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
