Maybe this weekend...

You weren't specifically coming off as critical--you're just right that there were a lot of Nazi films back then and I overlooked that in writing that part.

And absolutely yes for the torture scene in Marathon Man. It's effective specifically because it's so terrible and it's so terrible because it's so easily to relate to. And it plays right into one of my phobias because he's got the wrong guy, yet he won't believe him so he keeps drilling on his teeth.

And I wasn't finding fault with your reason not to watch. Sorry if it came across that way. I was responding more to the start of the post on the improbable concept which included, but was not limited to, South American Nazis.

You probably didn't read it since you haven't seen the film, but I recently reviewed Iron Sky which is a film whose main concept is Nazis on the Moon. (Yes, it's a comedy.) It's played straight, though, so some people thought it was supposed to be a serious action thriller. If you go with the concept (which I did) then it's a fun movie. My review's here, if you are interested: http://www.tipsfromchip.blogspot.com/2013/12/movie-iron-sky-2012.htmlChip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-6490969214504065292014-01-02T10:22:00.904-06:002014-01-02T10:22:00.904-06:00Yeah, I've considered going back and adding Os...Yeah, I've considered going back and adding Oscar nomination tags. That'll take me a full day, though. Still, it's probably worth it.

I also admit that sometimes it's not easy to come up with a solid reason not to watch a film. Still, since that's been a running theme through this blog, I'm committed to it. This one may not have been chosen too well.

I love Marathon Man. It's on one of my horror lists, and I'm looking forward to revisiting it. It's also one I suggested for the 1001 Movies list way back when. I read The Eagle Has Landed around the same time. I know that I saw the Boys from Brazil movie on broadcast TV shortly after reading the book, but I didn't know anybody that was in it yet. And what I remember of the story might be more from the book than the film. I do remember the ending and the bit you mentioned about the boy enjoying the carnage.

As a kid the movies that I heard about in the 70s ALL seemed to be about Nazis, whether they were WWII movies or Nazis are still alive movies. That's why I am only partly joking when I say that the idea for Marathon Man probably involved a bunch of people brainstorming ideas for villains, one says "how about Nazis?", another says "It's been done way too much. We need something more evil.", and then another finally says, "I know! Nazi dentists!"

On a related note: I had to look it up to find out where the Oscar nomination for The Boys from Brazil came in because I didn't remember. Just a thought: maybe listing it at the end would be good for reference?Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-52423583725940349182014-01-02T00:20:00.189-06:002014-01-02T00:20:00.189-06:00I suppose that's true.
