Often with a rom-com, I dislike both of the characters so much that I don't have a single thing invested in their future happiness.

The other way this one differs from the normal formula is that Toula's transformation may have been triggered by Ian, but he's not really a part of her world again until she has remade herself. She's really doing this for herself...and Ian is more or less someone she stumbles upon afterwards. She changes her life because she wants something more, not specifically because she wants him. That's subtle, but it's there, and I think it's an important aspect of the film and yet another reason I really like it.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-56213983641343226422015-04-23T09:47:34.411-05:002015-04-23T09:47:34.411-05:00I remember liking the Windex part quite a bit. And I did like the movie as a whole.

I remember thinking afterwards that there was a double standard at work, though. At the time this came out Romantic Comedies in general were being attacked for having a gorgeous woman fall for a not so gorgeous guy. They were being decried as nothing but male fantasies and therefore contemptible.

The situation is essentially reversed here. Instead of a shlubby guy who starts dressing better and ends up getting the gorgeous girl, we've got a frumpy woman who starts dressing better and ends up getting the gorgeous guy. There was no backlash here, though. The same people who hated the versions with the genders reversed said that they loved this.

And to be clear, I do not feel there should have been backlash. I feel that the ones that were being attacked for having a not so attractive man getting a pretty woman should not have been getting backlash, either. They are simply movies. Do we like the characters? Do we want to see them end up together? If the answer is yes to both, then what does it matter what they look like?Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-50629282096491680702015-04-23T07:59:44.675-05:002015-04-23T07:59:44.675-05:00"Why you want to leave me?" and "We..."Why you want to leave me?" and "We're gonna kill ya!" are the two that I tend to say more than any other.

This is a screenplay that I like quite a bit. From what I understand, it was adapated from Vardalos's one-woman show, and it shows a lot of practice and editing to make it is consistently fun and funny as it is.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-66981451835596494072015-04-23T07:57:31.953-05:002015-04-23T07:57:31.953-05:00My immediate family is large (two brothers, two si...My immediate family is large (two brothers, two sisters, ten kids between us), but my extended family is a lot smaller. In that respect, my brother's situation is a lot more analagous to the film. I'll take your word for it, though.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15311844408315824852015-04-23T00:31:17.589-05:002015-04-23T00:31:17.589-05:00This is one of the most quotable films as well, wh...This is one of the most quotable films as well, which is not something all Best Screenplay nominations can say. Whenever I see bunt cakes I think "Why does this cake have a hole in it?'; my friends always say 'Is he nice Greek boy?' and 'Anita, Diane and Nick' is sure to liven dull conversation. And of course, 'It's okay, I make you lamb!'Julia Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09041411551162128922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-85065522424331028812015-04-22T22:53:39.753-05:002015-04-22T22:53:39.753-05:00Not only is this movie really funny, it's also...Not only is this movie really funny, it's also one of the most honest portrayals of humongous families there is. A lot of the humor to me came from all the relatives interacting with each other cause it's so real.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00172446849111712883noreply@blogger.com
