I'd recommend looking into J.L. Schellenberg's argument from divine hiddenness.

The reason I say Bergman couldn't have fully expressed it, at least formally, is that the argument didn't exist formally until 1994.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-41083442242958351442017-12-17T05:41:21.203-06:002017-12-17T05:41:21.203-06:00Interesting review, Steve.

Tomas cannot see God anywhere, yet his interaction with Jonas and Märta can well be interpreted as the Christian imperative, to love thy neighbor. He is just so obsessed with his doubt that he fails to see the answer. Which makes him look like a fool.
Can't say i understood the ending well. Did you get the significanse? This is one I need to sit down with again because it's a very dense film for its short running time. My mind kept wandering and I'd realize that I had missed a few sub-titles. I've been having a Bergman-a-thon because TCM had a lot of Bergman last night and so far I've watched Smiles of a Summer Night, Wild Strawberries and this. Maybe it's a bit much. (I'm going to wait a few days before I watch The Silence.)

Still, I liked Winter Light, especially Ingrid Thulin. That part where she's narrating her letter to Thomas, I was riveted by that whole scene. And I also thought she was very good in the scene where Thomas is telling her all her faults in the schoolroom scene. OUCH! That's gonna leave a mark!

I figure I'll watch it again some years in the future, I'll watch the Faith Trilogy in another Bergman-a-thon and see what I think of them.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-55422572943047701422013-03-14T13:25:58.650-05:002013-03-14T13:25:58.650-05:00Right--there's not a lot of shock to his fate....Right--there's not a lot of shock to his fate.

I find that Bergman does work for me. This movie falls into the middle ground of Bergman's films with me, although since Bergman doesn't work for me in a number of cases, that makes this one of the ones I was able to appreciate some.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-69954005383739187242013-03-13T17:56:38.831-05:002013-03-13T17:56:38.831-05:00I've found going through the list that I reall...I've found going through the list that I really seem to like Bergman, but I also seem to need to be in the right mood for him. I appreciate his level of introspection, if not always the mood.

@Kim--Smiles of a Summer Night is a lot of fun just because it seems so out of character for him.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-82180962493365068942013-03-13T15:47:15.903-05:002013-03-13T15:47:15.903-05:00Bergman is almost always thought-provoking. I love how you broke down the film's notions and complexities about faith, along with its very detailed cinematography. Definitely not one to be viewed lightly. I can admire the filmmaking, though for me, I struggle to connect with Bergman's melancholic characters.
