I think the film wants to be clear that Diana is in over her head and isn't to blame for much of what happened.

It absolutely humanizes her, which is what she needed.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-34279230640826502542022-04-15T11:33:49.313-05:002022-04-15T11:33:49.313-05:00I liked that this film wasn't afraid to show D...I liked that this film wasn't afraid to show Diana as being messy herself. I think she's often painted as a saint nowadays and not a human with lots of feelings. I think that tends to be overwhelmed by the sense that she was caught up in things that were far larger than she was or ever could be.

While this is clearly Stewart's film, I think both Sally Hawkins and Timothy Spall are very good in all of their scenes.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-38454587928031562092022-04-12T21:18:02.246-05:002022-04-12T21:18:02.246-05:00I'm not quite as bullish on this as everyone e...I'm not quite as bullish on this as everyone else, but I do like it. I agree Stewart is phenomenal, but to me, she's far better than the film she's in. The issue is that it relies on whatever knowledge of Di's situation the viewer brings to the movie instead of itself molding her into a sympathetic character. Therefore, she vacillates between being an unfairly treated woman and a petulant child. Stewart handles this extremely well, but seems to be dragging the film along rather than moving in concert with it.Dellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05634519605152190304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-83846345704213263272022-04-12T08:38:41.374-05:002022-04-12T08:38:41.374-05:00I honestly didn't feel like it was too long at...I honestly didn't feel like it was too long at all. Spencer captures a state of mind, and speaks volumes about Diana's past and her intent for a different future, but with a sparsity of dialogue and traditional drama. It's a bit overlong, but Stewart demonstrates what a fine actress she is.aceblackblog.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08404695143187261837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-58373339119244388812022-04-11T22:00:48.528-05:002022-04-11T22:00:48.528-05:00I didn't mention the score and I really should...I didn't mention the score and I really should have. The score is magnificent. It often begins as a string quartet that slowly becomes more and more discordant and morphs into freeform jazz. The music matches what is happening--the "classical" past of Diana's life and the slow descent into what feels like madness and something that turns into a completely different form of music, perhaps less beautiful or less "traditional," but no less music.

It needs a lot more attention--it's one of the best parts of the film. It has me really hoping for a super-duper tour with NIN and Radiohead. thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.com
