Back to the Future ...I agree completely, of course. Back to the Future is kind of a slow build until Marty goes back in time. I'm okay with the opening--I think we're supposed to realize just how shitty Marty's life is (although typical of movies, regardless of how much of a loser he is, he's got a damn cute girlfriend. Seriously, what's up with that?).

Ferris = dick. I'll preach it all day long.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-43192393756942596882013-10-17T20:23:05.688-05:002013-10-17T20:23:05.688-05:00First, Ferris.
"I saw this much later—while ...First, Ferris.

"I saw this much later—while it came out my first year in college, I didn’t see it in the theater. I was older when I first encountered it, and it never fully worked for me because of it. The more I see it now, the more I want to corner Ferris and slap him around for being such a douchebag."

I completely agree with this. This is EXACTLY how I experienced this movie (although I was a full adult when I saw it) and this is how I still see it. You are NOT alone. :-)

I saw Back to the Future in the theater in 1985 and for the first fifteen minutes I sat there in utter disbelief at how bad it was. The parents were creepy, Marty's life sucked, none of it was working for me. And then he goes back in time and ALL of it, even the lame stuff, suddenly made sense. I don't think I've ever had such a turnaround in a film experience and the fact that Zemeckis was intentionally messing with expectations and setting up payoffs is brilliant.
Ipecachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157560182505626755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-72746124060547880902013-10-16T14:08:00.594-05:002013-10-16T14:08:00.594-05:00I know I'm in the minority on Ferris Bueller. ...I know I'm in the minority on Ferris Bueller. I'm okay with that. My wife and both of my kids love the film, even if I don't. It might well be that I'm on the other side of that equation these days--my professional life is far more Principal Rooney than it is Ferris Bueller, so I get exactly why Rooney is so frustrated.

My problem with Ferris Bueller, strangely enough, is following the consequences of the actions. It's something I don't worry about at all with Back to the Future, but I can't help but wonder the hell of Cameron's life after this day, all of which is caused by Ferris's desire to have fun at any expense. I can't get past it.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-29913142735873361822013-10-16T11:17:37.920-05:002013-10-16T11:17:37.920-05:00I love Back to the Future. (For instance, we know the MINUTE the lighting will strike, but not the microsecond within it. Hitting the connection at the right time would be astronomically unlikely.)

I also love Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The only thing that keeps it from being a great film for me is the "Important Message" section about Cameron. That brings the film to a screeching halt and it's only the entertaining race for Ferris to get home that revives the film.

"Hate on me all you want. Deep down, you know I’m right."

I don't hate you. It's the responsibility of those of us who are in our right minds to be patient with those who are not. (heavy tongue in cheek action here.)

I saw this in the theater and the entire audience (all adults - it was a late show) laughed their asses off, so even though I was still young enough to appreciate my teens, there were many in the audience who were decades older than me at the time and they loved it, too. You're honestly the first person I've ever heard of who doesn't like the film - not that I've sought out hundreds of opinions on it, of course.

You know what makes a great "play with your mind" double feature? Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Election. Seeing Broderick on the two different sides of the equation is fun.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-44527086609911824012013-10-15T12:36:43.859-05:002013-10-15T12:36:43.859-05:00I have to say, I'm encouraged and pleased by t...I have to say, I'm encouraged and pleased by the sudden revealing of Ferris Bueller dislike. I dislike Ferris for placing Cameron in this position and hate him for not caring. Yet I can almost forgive all that for the last scene of the filme where a little girl is offering a dirty piece of candy to Rooney and he flicks it away. His expression is fantastic.

Back to the Future may be the single movie I have seen most times. That says it all.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.com
