I agree that there's not much here to love, though. I went into this wit...Yes to everything you said.

I went into this with a little foreknowledge that it was considered stilted and Mary's win was more of an acknowledgement of her position in the industry and her basically expressing the desire to have one. This being early in the process and the amount of power she wielded at the time that's about all it took.

Even knowing that it was still an immense struggle to get through and I can't say I remember much of it since it was so rotten at the beginning, including Mary's performance, I tuned out most of it. Pickford is one of the classic stars I just don't get, her backstage achievements are awesome indeed and she surely had something that connected with audiences but I'm at a loss to see it. Perhaps I've seen the wrong selection of her films but of the ones I've seen she seems a cloying ham missing the lively spark of Clara Bow, the soulfulness of Garbo or the melancholy of Lillian Gish. There is one film of hers I'm still on the hunt for, her last Secrets it's reputed to contain her best ever work and should have been the one she was awarded for, maybe that would change my opinion. This one certainly didn't.

Don't know if you've ever seen the version of Taming of the Shrew she and Fairbanks made but it's agonizingly bad.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-64520191912780723042014-08-15T12:48:44.092-05:002014-08-15T12:48:44.092-05:00I didn't think of that, but I think you're...I didn't think of that, but I think you're right. As a silent film, we wouldn't have been subjected to the dialogue. Seriously, there's enough wooden acting in this film to make a dining room table and half a dozen chairs.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-63540179402243363852014-08-15T08:14:14.572-05:002014-08-15T08:14:14.572-05:00"I’m going to have a hard time getting to my ..."I’m going to have a hard time getting to my typical 700-word minimum here" -- I had a difficult time finding 100 words to describe this one. Same feelings here. I was expecting a whole lot more from this one. I think it would have made a better silent film - though not by much.Klaushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05006608076041962884noreply@blogger.com
