For actresses, I look at Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose, which is (I think) equally astonishing.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-50669541603002687772013-02-21T13:58:07.311-06:002013-02-21T13:58:07.311-06:00Excellent review here. No Based on a True Story is really the true story, but this on does a fine job indeed. We were talking about star-making performances yesterday on my site, and man, if there ever was one, DDL's Christy Brown is certainly that.Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-56034524937642287002013-02-17T14:32:30.973-06:002013-02-17T14:32:30.973-06:00I think there is some inspiration to be had here, ...I think there is some inspiration to be had here, if only from the "look at the challenges overcome" standpoint.

As for Day-Lewis, he's just so damn good in this that I'm not sure I'm willing to put another of his performances ahead of it. He's so great and what he is able to do with this performance, still shocks me to this day. Of course he's had better performances over the years, but this was a great way to get his foot in the door, and it's never left. What we were doing watching My Left Foot is a bit beyond me to this day, especially as I'm a teacher now, but it was certainly an engaging experience. What you mention in your review, and that quote that I reposted here, was precisely my take-away from this film. Christy was hardly a saint, and it was the first time I had been presented with a "non-traditional" telling like this, where I am clearly meant to feel sympathy for Christy due to his medical condition, but Christy as a person won't let me. It's definitely a refreshing take on what could easily have been a Hallmark Channel Movie story.

Yeah, Daniel Day-Lewis is pretty goddamned serious and pretty goddamned awesome.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-89827587662266992502013-02-14T09:29:44.193-06:002013-02-14T09:29:44.193-06:00I think it's pretty common to ignore child per...I think it's pretty common to ignore child performances in films like this. When the adult's performance is so good, we tend to attribute the kid's performance to the adult, even though that's completely ridiculous.

It's an Oscar cliche that for a man to win an Oscar, he has to play someone mentally or physically disabled, so in that respect Day-Lewis had that going for him. But really, how could he not have won? I'm still staggered by just how damn good he was in this.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-74344086226291914522013-02-14T09:17:18.769-06:002013-02-14T09:17:18.769-06:00I think I had seen Day-Lewis in a film or two befo...I think I had seen Day-Lewis in a film or two before this, but I didn't remember him. This is the one that put him front and center for me. When he walked up on stage to get the Oscar I remember being stunned at how different he looked from the character he played.

Thanks for mentioning O'Conor's performance. I consider it just as impressive as Day-Lewis'. The "mother" scene would not have been anywhere near as powerful if O'Conor hadn't also given a great performance.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-46141627583674332142013-02-14T09:08:48.914-06:002013-02-14T09:08:48.914-06:00I agree completely.
