It is mindnumbingly horrendous and she flails about without a clue as to who her character is or should be. Probably the worst she ever was. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-17277678722696783342016-11-08T13:37:22.791-06:002016-11-08T13:37:22.791-06:00I'm happy to know that I'm not alone here....I'm happy to know that I'm not alone here. The call out to Hepburn as something like a manic pixie dream girl is a good one--it's the same sort of role she has in Alice Adams, Little Women, Bringing Up Baby, and even The Philadelphia Story to some extent, although she's a lot darker in that one (and darker to good effect).

This probably would be forgotten if not for her win. I do like the turn it takes in the third act, and I even like her rather manic reaction to what happens because it feels like it's in character. But it's a rough go to get there. She began to slow down and modulate a bit around 1936's A Woman Rebels but before that she was very green and over-emphatic. Even in her best early film, Little Women there are times when she just overwhelms with her persistent pushiness.

I'm at a loss as how she won, the performance is keyed way too high. She's just twitter and flounce and boor all the time. I know there were only three contenders at the time but when one of them was May Robson's delightful Apple Annie how did they go with this? I guess it's the first instance of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl that I hate so much taking the prize, and the hot IT girl of the moment narrative coming into play.

While Menjou and C. Aubrey Smith are good the film is a relic that would be forgotten if not for Hepburn's win.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15684269747669772332016-11-08T09:28:54.815-06:002016-11-08T09:28:54.815-06:00It would make sense that Powell would be making fu...It would make sense that Powell would be making fun of this film since Hepburn won the Oscar for it the previous year.

I can't say you're missing a lot if you don't see Morning Glory. Even though the end is strong, it's pretty drippy all the way through. (OMG! Have you seen Keeper of the Flame? Sooooo dumb.) I find Joan Crawford or Bette Davis to be a lot more likely to be good in 1930s movies.

And it's not Hepburn's fault, it's just the difference between the movies she made and the wonderful WB movies that Bette Davis was in, and those wacky dramas Joan Crawford did.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Morning Glory is the specific Hepburn movie that Eleanor Powell was making fun of with her Hepburn impression in Broadway Melody of 1936. (I love that whole scene, where she dances with Buddy Ebsen on the rooftop.) Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.com
