It was a difficult one to make a decision on. I do like Interiors, but it's not normally the sort of film I would tap for this award. It's more or less the best of what's here.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-36920634451863674692015-08-10T09:53:48.974-05:002015-08-10T09:53:48.974-05:00I have not seen Interiors. I agree with most everything you wrote about them.

Even among the other films you named I'd still go with none of the above. I'm not a horror fan, Killer of Sheep didn't stay with me much afterwards, and while Days of Heaven is the one Malick film I can think of that DOESN'T have bloat in it, he shouldn't be rewarded just for making a film without his trademark filler.

The first commenter suggested Superman or Grease. While I wouldn't think of either of them for Best Picture, it had to take some skill for their directors to coordinate the ton of stuff that was happening onscreen.

Among the 1001 Movies entries I remember liking The Tree of Wooden Clogs. I just did an IMDB search for 1978 movies with at least 500 votes. Among the 200 films not much jumped out at me as a movie I'd call good.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-7829363310235825192015-08-07T23:15:07.412-05:002015-08-07T23:15:07.412-05:00I might consider either movie for Best Picture, bu...I might consider either movie for Best Picture, but not specifically for director.

Giving the vote to the general public would've made Avatar Best Picture for 2009. In that respect, the system in place works a little better. I think there is some credence to the idea that we should wait 3-5 years to hand out awards, though. And other than Carpenter's absolutely brilliant "Halloween," most people have never heard, or seen, those films whose directors were nominated. Personally, I would have also thrown Ralph Bakshi's take on Tolkien in the mix as well, but I was only a kid when I saw it, so it may not hold up quite as well today.John from Daejeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08431973044799010218noreply@blogger.com
