He honestly wasn't a bad looking guy in his 30s.

I wonder if he seems older just because he ended up looking so much older than he was for much of his career and because his best-known roles are of him as a much older man. Then again, there's something to this, because four years after he did this film, he did The Story of G.I. Joe, and he seems easily a decade older.

Jean Arthur may have been able to handle this role, but I'm not sure she had the necessary perceived innocence of Ginger Rogers.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-30921697685208559502016-03-10T13:55:39.690-06:002016-03-10T13:55:39.690-06:00It's fluff to be sure but good-natured fluff. ...It's fluff to be sure but good-natured fluff. That's a good point about it being tough to envision as anyone's favorite but impossible to think anyone would dislike it either.

In her overall filmography this does seem like a step back for Ginger but the huge stars of the day were kept so busy they usually turned out some piece of expected typical entertainment between weightier higher profile assignments. And until she glazed over into the sleek sophisticate of the 1950's and beyond few were better at playing someone this flighty.

A young Burgess Meredith throws me a bit, there's something inherently older about him even then. Probably his voice added in with his somewhat craggy appearance. I've always had a hard time reconciling the fact that he was married to Paulette Goddard for a number of years, they seem like an even odder match than he and Ginger.

There's a musical remake of this called The Girl Most Likely with Jane Powell which despite color, songs and a decent supporting cast including Kaye Ballard and Cliff Robertson is even more flyaway.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
