I tend to feel that way about a lot of movies where my opinion is far less than everyone else's.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-45925146393843166512022-03-12T12:16:12.373-06:002022-03-12T12:16:12.373-06:00Curiously, i had a rather different take on this m...Curiously, i had a rather different take on this movie. As a crime noir i found it weak until I decided this was not at all about the crime. It is just noir.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-48049991510172857892013-05-29T13:29:23.332-05:002013-05-29T13:29:23.332-05:00I really wanted to like this one, and I did right ...I really wanted to like this one, and I did right up to the actual killing of the Chinese bookie. After that, it just stops being very believable in a lot of ways. ...Yes, this one is definitely gritty. Definitely.

I saw this one at the Dryden, but I also saw it with Seymour Cassel and Ben Gazzara there to discuss what it was like working with Cassavetes after the screening. That was pretty cool (especially now that Gazzara has died, I feel very lucky in getting to hear what it was like for him to make movies). My favorite anecdote of the night was one of Gazzara's, who said that Cassavetes turned to him one day about halfway through shooting the movie and said,

"What if we don't?"
"Don't what?"
"Don't kill him."
"Who?"
"The Chinese bookie. What if we don't kill him?"
"John, this movie is CALLED 'The KILLING of a Chinese Bookie!' We have to kill him!"
"I guess..."

I love that little story.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.com
