I'm not going to pretend that that doesn't affect my opinion, but in this case, I think the fault is mine, not the movie's.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-51013184539517089312017-12-12T13:33:45.835-06:002017-12-12T13:33:45.835-06:00I watched this last night. I tried to watch it the night before, but it was late and I was tired and I realized at the forty-minute mark that I just wasn't getting it at all.

So next day, I did a little research on Taiwan and the aftermath of World War II and the conflict between the Taiwanese and the Chinese from the mainland. WOW! This is mostly new to me.

So I started it over last night and this time I found myself watching a wonderful beautiful examination of an extended Taiwanese family dealing with the Nationalists and their corruption and their inefficiency and their repression.

You could call it Taiwan's Gone with the Wind. And imagine watching GWTW with sub-titles and very little knowledge of American history. You'd be wondering what the war was even about. Why are those mean Northerners attacking all those nice rich white folks who are taking care of those downtrodden black people who would probably freeze in the winter if not for the generosity of the Southerners?

(And I say this as a fan of GWTW. It deserves its classic status despite being kind of creaky to modern eyes.)Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-30965073532681204582013-03-06T11:37:11.684-06:002013-03-06T11:37:11.684-06:00I think that's often true for films about topi...I think that's often true for films about topics like this. It's much easier to follow the story when you know the basic history behind it. You have a sense of what's going to happen when you know historically what actually did happen.

Leung is a better actor than he's given credit for in the West. My favorite of his films is In the Mood for Love, but that's probably because it's one of my favorite Chinese films ever.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-13108478330689087742013-03-06T11:19:47.984-06:002013-03-06T11:19:47.984-06:00I agree on Leung's performance. He's actually in several of the films on the list (and a few more that aren't, but should be).

Like you, I sometimes had trouble following what was going on. It did seem to me that the film was made more for people already familiar with the history, rather than being made to inform outsiders of what happened.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
