They couldn't really go for the gross out that much, so they tried to do a lot more with atmosphere, with creating a world that contained danger and not just nasty things.

There's room for both, of course, but the modern horror movies that shoot for the creeps often aren't as successful as those that go for the straight gross-out. It's given horror a bad name, and that's a sad thing.

Guillermo del Toro once said that a spiritual experience is not just something that lifts you. It can also be something that shows you fear. Good horror can do that--genuine fear, not "Ew! Ick!" squeamishness.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-31850255370498954902017-07-13T16:34:42.252-05:002017-07-13T16:34:42.252-05:00That she was.

She was never utilized as well as she should have been. But she's hardly alone in that respect in Old (or New) Hollywood.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-82008001013043330112017-07-13T12:35:31.693-05:002017-07-13T12:35:31.693-05:00Love this film! While I'm not a horror fan I am a fan of this genre of spookers that include films like the original Cat People, The Haunting and especially The Spiral Staircase.

The quality of the cast, full of Oscar nominees and winners, shows that the studio was a bit more committed to turning out a quality film than the Universal cheapies of the time but then of course this came from the plusher Paramount.

Milland and Ruth Hussey make great siblings, their mannerisms are similar and their interactions add much to the movie.

Gail Russell was also an excellent pick for the ethereal Stella with her melancholy air, large liquid eyes and delicate beauty. She has a very interesting presence it's such a pity that the wounded uncertain vibe she exudes wasn't put on but an indication of crippling stage fright that eventually destroyed her career and life by way of the alcoholism that she fell into to combat her fear.

The cinematography and the musical score all add into the eerie feeling the film has as well as the somewhat nutso performance of Cornelia Otis Skinner. It a bit of a disservice to her but after all these years watching her now she definitely gives off a Mrs. Danvers vibe.

I think gore fans would be disappointed in this but I've recommended it to several people who were willing to give it a fair shot and they've all come back with positive reactions.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-31676276844336021832017-07-13T11:32:45.870-05:002017-07-13T11:32:45.870-05:00I had to look up whether Ruth Hussey might have be...I had to look up whether Ruth Hussey might have been in any way related to Olivia (mother? aunt?). Nope. But Ruth was a looker in her heyday.
