Perhaps that makes it feel quieter, although I think you're probably right about that, too. Like Breaker Morant! It's probably the only film about the Boer War that most people ever see.

So I was very pleased with Kippur. It's not just a film about a conflict most Americans know little about, but it also has a unique perspective, a couple of reservists trying to find the war. And they find it, in a helicopter rescue squad.

You can't help but notice that it's one of the quietest war movies ever made. Life goes on, but nothing changes--everyone is sort of frozen. I liked that effect.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-64361391789353324582013-03-14T11:01:42.306-05:002013-03-14T11:01:42.306-05:00I happened to see this only a week or so ago. Yes, I realize the point of the film was not to show big battles, but every event seemed stretched out interminably. You mentioned the helicopter rides. The first one was interesting. The second one was okay. The third, fourth, etc. ones were just overkill. It was as if the director fell in love with that shot and couldn't resist using it over and over. And during the down times it's like everyone spoke in slow motion. Someone would say something, there would be a pause of several seconds, someone would respond, there would be a pause of several seconds, etc.

I liked this movie for a good while, but the pace eventually got frustrating to me. I feel with some editing (maybe 15 minutes or so) this could be a tighter, better flowing movie.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-21367037801592440552013-03-14T07:42:52.433-05:002013-03-14T07:42:52.433-05:00There aren't a terrible number of war films on...There aren't a terrible number of war films on the list. There are a few, and most of them are of the "war is hell" variety.

Knowing the conflict does help for me, though. There are times when war is justified. It's still a terrible thing, it still kills indiscriminately, still destroys lives, but there are times when it's necessary--and to me that really makes a difference.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-4348279033820991282013-03-14T02:30:50.151-05:002013-03-14T02:30:50.151-05:00I have not seen this one but it sounds very intere...I have not seen this one but it sounds very interesting. The best war movies in my opinion are the ones that make you abhore war, so this perspective would definitely be interesting. Often you do not really need to understand the conflict to get the message that dead is dead and war is a pretty ugly affair. The early part of the list where I am mostly focused is fortunately thin on war pictures, but they get a lot more dense later on and I am not too excited about that.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-86507624789454690622013-03-13T23:56:50.167-05:002013-03-13T23:56:50.167-05:00I know a little of the history, but not a ton.
