Month 19 Status Report...plus news!

July was a bit of a down month. I might still sneak in another movie this evening, which would bring me to 22 total from The List, plus the last Harry Potter movie which will probably never make the list.

News #1: Results are in from my poll. 85% of those polled believe in some way or another I should start a podcast, so it looks like that will soon be in the works. Four of you (and you know who you are) said you'd be interested in co-hosting. If that was you, please contact me via email (sjhoneywell@comcast.net). I'm thinking bi-weekly.

News #2: The 8th edition of The 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die has been announced for September release. The word is that a whopping 23 films have been added to this new edition. Since the cover is Natalie Portman from Black Swan, we can pretty much rest assured that it's one of the 23. The other 22 are a mystery. I have some suspicions (The Social Network, The King's Speech, Inception), some hopes (Restrepo, Exit Through the Gift Shop, The Illusionist) and some fears (Antichrist, Buried). What do YOU think deserves placement? Which movies from 2009 and 2010 do you think should be canonized as officially "must-see"? Got some ideas? That's what the comments are for.

  1. I've been browsing through David Thomson's "Have You Seen...?" which runs 1000 pages with a movie reviewed on each page. He started out planning to include his top 1000 favorite films, but his editors required that he include more "fun" movies. I've been meaning to compare the list he went with with the 1001 MYMSBYD list. He did make an effort to choose movies that covered the history of cinema world-wide, or so he claims.

  2. Nice progress on the 1001 list! I'm afraid I've been pretty negligent during the month of July -only 7 of 34 films watched/reviewed are from the list.

I've yet to see the 6th or 7th edition - they're still selling the 5th in bookstores out our way. I'm definitely in need of an update!

For 2009, i'd like to see the following on the list:
    Tyson
    Moon
    The Road
    District 9
    Inglourious Basterds

    For 2010:
    The American
    127 Hours
    The King's Speech
    Neds
    True Grit

  3. I agree on Moon--great film. Inglourious Basterds did make the 7th edition.

For 2010, Black Swan is the only shoo-in. The ones I suspect are Inception, The King's Speech, Winter's Bone, True Grit, Restrepo, Toy Story 3, The Social Network and Exit Through the Gift Shop.

I'd like to see How to Train Your Dragon and The Illusionist, but I'm wondering of the creators of The List are that hip.

  4. I happened to see a copy of the latest 1001 book with the Black Swan cover at my local Barnes and Noble. Doing a quick glance over the last few years I noticed the following additions:

    2009 - In the Loop
    District 9

    2010 - True Grit
    The King's Speech
    Inception
    The Social Network
    Four Lions
    Black Swan
    Des Hommes et des Dieux
    Monsters

I did not get a chance to search for deletions and I may have missed something - so please consider this "unofficial".
