Month 30 Status Report

Thirty months in, and I've crested the 700 review mark. There's still a lot to go, and some films will continue to be problems for me. If you look to the right (and when this scrolls down the list, to the right and up), you'll find a link to a wiki on finding the 150 or so films not currently available on NetFlix. That's great. However, I'm having real technical issues getting these things to work.

It's all okay, though, because except for a couple of films, I've got alternate routes for a lot of them.

July, though, will likely be a month of obscurities with a few well-known films tossed in for good measure. However, I've decided that it makes sense to focus a bit more attention on these more difficult films. I have watched and reviewed more than half of that list on the wiki, which helps, but there's still a long way to go, and I prefer not to overload the people who can get a few of these for me now and then.

A big victory this month was completing the first 100 films on the list. With L'Atalante done early in the month, I've now done everything from 1936 and earlier, so that feels like something of an accomplishment.

  1. Congrats on surpassing that landmark!

I gotta say, I've been watching movies from The List for about six years now, but discovering your site (and joining Squish's club) has really inspired me to start blogging about the films as well. So keep going! I've been enjoying reading your old reviews.

    1. You should know that Squish considers you a female version of the two of us, since he and I frequently share a brain.

    2. I am way too tickled over your comment. It's been very nice for me making new "movie internet friends."

  3. Congrats on finishing off the first 100 AND on passing 700 reviews.

What are the technical issues you are having with the wiki links? I know that they are new to you and I've sent instructions in emails to try to help walk you through getting the pieces and knitting them together, but perhaps I skipped over some steps that I should not have. If you send me an email with a specific example, and where you are getting stuck, I will try to get you over that hump.

    1. The short answer is that if I knew what the problem was, it wouldn't be a problem.

One of the programs caused my system to lock up. Simple as that. I'm going to give it another shot this week, if all goes well.

    2. That doesn't sound good. To clarify, I meant at what point was the problem occurring (getting the pieces, knitting the pieces together, playing the movie, playing the movie with English subtitles, etc.)

System locking up sounds like either knitting the pieces together or playing the movie. If it's playing the movie I use VLC Media Player when I watch films on my computer. It will play pretty much everything. So will RealPlayer. Both are available for free on download.com.

I don't use Windows Media Player because it seems to not like some of the common media types and/or it always wants to download a plugin (which is just an excuse for it to upload to Microsoft info on all the movies you've watched via it).

    3. I'll going to try one of the really obscure ones this week, I hope. Fingers crossed...

    4. Good luck. If you still have problem, please don't hesitate to drop me a note and we can see if we can work through it. It would suck if you couldn't get these to work because many of them will never see the light of day on any rentable media.

  4. Congrats on your new landmark. I'll be going through and looking at a few of these reviews for sure.

I know about the problem of finding some of these. Did you try the app (canistream.it). That at least will tell you if something is streaming or not. Other than that buying them is I'm sure really expensive.
