New Year, New List

According to fellow 1001 Movies blogger Nicolas Krizan at Beyond 1001 Movies, the new edition of The List is out. I haven't seen the book yet and have no idea what was pulled, but there are evidently 10 new additions. These are:

The Look of Silence
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Revenant
Son of Saul
Bridge of Spies
The Big Short
Spotlight
Tangerine
Straight Outta Compton
Mad Max: Fury Road

For a wonder, I've already seen seven of the new 10. Even more interesting, I've seen the longest seven. Two of the three I haven't seen are currently streaming on NetFlix and I've got the third one on DVD next to the television. Looks like I'll be done with this edition pretty quickly.

  1. These are the same 10 that someone had earlier posted in the comments sections for the Letterboxd version of the list. The same guy had also posted the additions early the past two years and was right on both times, so I was fairly certain these would be the new ones, but I wanted confirmation from someone who had a printed copy and who could also corroborate the removals. I'd say this definitely counts.

Now... how to go about the ordering?

    1. Also, a few laughs; the Facebook post Nic linked to in his post was apparently put up in June, so these have been valid for several months and we just never knew. :D

    2. Well...I know that at least part of the introduction was viewable on Amazon, so I knew about half of these already.

On my list (the link "The List" over to the right) has them right now in the order that they are here, which is the same order from Nicolas's site. The real question in terms of the ordering would depend on what was removed, wouldn't it? And the current order in the print version?

    3. If we're going by the current standard, the removals get shifted to the end of their respective years, and the additions get added in the order of the book, which I'm assuming this is (though the guy on Letterboxd had one film in a different spot than this list, so I wasn't too sure who to go by - they could've just as easily shifted the order around during printing, so I wanted to make sure).

    4. Right. I thought I remembered that that was the process. Still, it's not something I'm sure we can do until we have someone who has access to a print copy.

  2. I've seen four of these and I liked them all, and I'm especially glad to see Mad Max: Fury Road on the list. But I dread seeing the movies that got dumped to include The Force Awakens. It was exciting and a nice diversion for an afternoon, and most of the people I was with were rather hostile that I wasn't more enthusiastic about it. I'm dubious about its status as a must-see film. Hopefully they got rid of some things I won't miss.

  3. Among the films they removed to make way for The Force Awakens:

    The Cave of Forgotten Dreams
    Django Unchained
    The Act of Killing

I like Cave and Django a lot more than The Force Awakens, but I can accept that as a subjective preference and I can see why the return of the beloved franchise might give Force enough points to make the cut.

But they removed The Act of Killing and put in The Force Awakens? I've never seen anything quite like The Act of Killing. One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Meanwhile Hollywood puts out action/sci-fi movies as good as or better than Force several times a year.

    1. Having not seen the book or any of the write-ups, I can't really comment as to the reasoning. I suspect, though, that Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have been added because it seems like a return to form for the Star Wars universe. Much more than the prequels, this is the sort of thing that will get a whole new generation of movie goers excited about that universe. Of the ones I've seen, Bridge of Spies is the one I'd most likely question. It's good, but nothing exceptional, although Mark Rylance is great in it.

For me, the worst swap ever was dumping Amelie the same year that Paranormal Activity was added.

Also, I have no issue with Django Unchained being dropped. I think the first two acts are great and it becomes typical Tarantino violence-for-the-sake-of-violence at the end. I'm a little relieved I don't have to watch The Hateful Eight to stay current.

    2. I saw The Hateful Eight on New Year's Eve in a theater, and it was AWESOME! A unique movie-going experience. You feel like you're trapped in that cabin with all these awful awful people for hours and hours.

I don't think it would have quite the same effect on a smaller screen. But it's still a great movie if you appreciate that kind of thing.

    3. It's not that I don't trust Tarantino. It's more that I don't trust what anyone else says about Tarantino films.

    4. FWIW, they likely removed The Act of Killing to add The Look of Silence, in the same way they got rid of the first Aileen Wuornos documentary to add the newer one. Whether or not they should've is up for debate.

  4. I've also seen seven of these, and question both Bridge of Spies
and Spotlight making the list. Decent movies, but nothing special. I'd take Star Wars: The Force Awakens over them, but would not have replaced Cave of Forgotten Dreams with any of the 10.

    1. Since the Best Picture winner always gets added, Spotlight was a no-brainer. I actually think it belongs anyway--I thought it was well made and smart, and would make a great companion piece to All the President's Men.

  5. No Brooklyn or Ex Machina??? Were two of my favorites from last year.
I thought they were much better than The Revenant (overlong), and Bridge of Spies (ok but nothing special). Glad to see Mad Max:Fury Road on the list.

    1. Science fiction is always a long shot, and Fury Road may well have been their one sop to the genre. I agree on Ex Machina, though. I thought it was a smart movie and really well made, and I always appreciate it when filmmakers respect the intelligence of the audience.

      I haven't seen Brooklyn yet, so I can't comment.

  6. All removals, according to 1001 Movies App (just in case someone didn't notice):

    Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010)

    Amour (2012)
    Django Unchained (2012)
    The Act of Killing (2012)
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
    Citizen Four (2014)
    Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
    The Theory of Everything (2014)

    1. Some of those probably shouldn't have been there in the first place. Others...I think they are bad removals.
