Month 43 Status Report

July was a big month, and it's not quite done. As of right now, I took 28 films off The List this month, including a few of the longer ones I had left. There's a chance I'll put up one more review tonight, taking the total to 29. In either case, I've got fewer than 60 movies left on the current List (I'll be at 57 or 56, tonight's potential review depending).

I'm in an interesting position--it's entirely possible that I could finish the list before the release of the next edition, which promises to hold 50 new films in recognition of this being the 10th edition. I've decided in the past that I'll leave at least one film (The Last Picture Show at the very least) until the new volume comes out. Were it not for that, I likely would finish before September 30. As it stands, that date will likely push back to late November or early December.

Most important to me, the goal I ultimately settled on was finishing in four years. Even with the continual addition of new films (I think I started at like 1056 and have seen that balloon up to 1103, and potentially 1153 this year), I'll still make it barring any serious trauma. It's a good reminder that such goals are achievable, provided that one works toward them consistently and maintains a level of focus. I realize I now sound like a moral from the G.I. Joe cartoon (and knowing is half the battle), but it's true in this case.

Oops there goes another rubber tree plant."

    1. Pretty much. I prefer the "Know how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time." version, myself.

      Or, if you prefer:

  2. I'm not sure how you keep up your pace! But you are doing a great job and hope you can start working on some new lists!

I've also heard that the next edition will add 50 new films. I saw it on the Internet, so it must be true.

    1. I maintain my breakneck pace by having (and I'm serious about this) no other hobbies. I don't watch television, I pay no attention to sports, and I "read" in the car on my commute with audiobooks. Movies are my one hobby, so watching 5-7 a week isn't that strenuous.

    1. These days, none of 'em. The following link is your great and good friend.

  4. I'm endlessly impressed by your ability to keep up with this. I've started so many movie lists and post series, and I have never, ever completed one to this day. Never. I have some that I'm like "yeah, I'm gonna get back into that one soon" and then I realize I haven't actually done anything with it in like three years. So good on you, sir. You're an inspiration.

  5. I'm following this blog for quite some time now. Well, basically since I've started to approach this mission, too. But so far I've only seen 480 movies of the list. So there is still a long way ahead of me. First of all, I have to say: I really love this blog. Your comments on the movies are very well written. I've often visited this site to get some inspiration, which movie of the list to watch next. And I really admire how you keep up the pace.

The reason for my comment today is an interesting and - at least for me - surprising discovery I made a few days ago:

Until this week I was under the impression that "the complete" version of Steven Jay Schneiders 1001-movies-list contains 1103 movies, if you count every movie that appeared in at least one edition of the book.

Well, obviously there are more editions than the ones that have been printed in the english language. During the last 10 years the book has been published in a lot of non-english-speaking countries and here is the crazy part: some (not all) of the "local" editions contain additional movies. Mostly movies that were made in the particular country. For example, the swedish version of the book contains 22 additional movies (over several editions throughout the years).

At Icheckmovies.com I've found a "complete" 1001-movies-list that contains the additional movies of quite a few local editions. Looks like the "complete" list contains at least 1252 movies. And there might be more. The author of the list I mentioned, states that he or she has no definite overview of all the different editions that have been published all around the world.

I don't know if you are already aware of that and have chosen to ignore that fact at some point or if this fact is also new to you. If it is, there are probably up to 149 movies that are dying to get watched by you. And me. And everyone who wants to finish that list… before he or she dies.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Heh. I know about the other versions, but I'm focused on the English language versions for now. I may look up the others and track down some, but with 50 new ones proposed for the next edition, I think 1153 is enough for now.

      Oh, and thanks for reading.
