End of Year Fifteen

My goal every year is to watch 400 movies, and for the last few years I’ve been coming up short. I came up short again this year, but I’m a lot closer than I normally am. This year I hit 366 movies, which comes out to exactly one movie per day.

I finished the Oscar list from 2023 earlier this month, just in time for the next set of Oscars, which get announced in a couple of weeks.

It’s been a tough year personally. Some big changes on the horizon, and while I’ll be keeping up here, I’m cutting back in a few other places in my life. Speaking of the upcoming Oscars, I’m happy to take suggestions for anything from 2024 that I’ve missed that you think is worth watching in the years ahead. Talk to you soon!

  1. At least you did better than I did with 267 films that I saw this year with Days of Heaven being the final film I watched for the year. I wanted to reach 500 but that is now become an impossible feat. I hope to do 300 for next year. Never ever do long film pieces like Berlin Alexanderplatz ever again.

    1. I got to a point in December where if I wanted to hit 400 movies, I needed to watch two per day, and I figured it just wasn't worth it. One per day is good enough.

I get what you mean about those monster-length movies. Satantango and Shoah took forever to get through.

  2. Well done. I am curious to see what gets nominated this year and what you think of them.

    1. I think 2024 was a good year for movies, but Oscar often has a way of screwing that up.

  3. 400 is an ambitious benchmark but 366 new films in a year is quite an accomplishment!

I'm impressed that you were able to get through all the 2023 Oscar list. I used to be such a completist for them when going to the movie theatre was all that was necessary to keep up, but now everything is so scattered over different formats I just don't have the time (or honestly the inclination) to work my way through all of that.

    1. Sadly, it wasn't 366 new films--it was 366 total. It was about 280 new ones, which isn't bad.

My Oscar list is just seven categories--Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Original and Adapted Screenplays, and Animated Feature. That's more than enough, honestly.
