End of Year Sixteen

I barely cracked 300 movies this year. It’s a little disappointing on the surface, but considering the year I had, it’s actually kind of impressive. 2025 has been a meat grinder for me; I’m not looking for sympathy or pats on the back, and I’m not trying to compare misery dicks with anyone on this. It’s been a rotten year and I’m happy to see it in the rearview.

I have a number of goals for 2026, both on this blog, online in general, and in the real world. I’m waking up more and more to what the world feels like it is and what I feel like it should be, and there is a large gap there that, bluntly, I feel the need to do something about.

This year, it’s a victory to have made it to the end. I’m looking at the lists of films that I’m still working on, and while those lists are shorter than they were, they’re still pretty long. How much longer will I do this? I haven’t decided. Do I want to be of retirement age (coming soon, honestly) and still dropping my thoughts on film online?

Don’t worry—I’ll be here for a few more years at least. But this year has forced me to confront mortality in a real way. Off-topic but serious, put together a will. Make your desires known. It happens quickly, and while it feels morbid, it’s important.

Be well. See you on the other side of the new year.

  1. I hope 2026 is far brighter for you. Something about being retired and dropping movie reviews online sounds nice to me lol

    1. Honestly, it might end up just being a hobby that I keep. I've got a few days before I get there.

  2. Fwiw, I'm glad you're still reviewing (even if I hardly comment). 2025 was a shitstorm -- I'm right there with you on feeling like I should be doing more to address the gap between where we are and what we should be. Hang in there. I'm wishing you a better 2026

    1. Yeah, it was a bad year. I'm starting the year with a list of goals for 2026.

I did manage a few things in 2025 that I want to build on--the big one is getting rid of my front yard and replacing it with local plants. Even got a plaque from the Audobon Society.

  3. 180 films for me this year. Lame. Fuck 2025. 2026, no plans other than my Blind Spots.

    1. That's fair. Relatable, completable goals are a good thing, and maybe we all need to be easier on ourselves.

    1. Oh, I assure you I'll be here for a few more years at least. There will come a time when I feel like I've aged out of this, though.
